How often do you meet people who not only inspire, but have a lasting impact?

A mentor, a trailblazer and a scientist who fights passionately for equal opportunities? For me, Prof. Dr. Susanne Boll is just such a person! Her award as Zonta Woman of the Year 2025 is a well-deserved tribute to her extraordinary commitment.

When I was working with Birgit Novy was able to give the laudatory speech in Susanne’s honor, it was a special moment. Not only because it is a great honor, but also because I have a long and formative history with her. Susanne Boll not only exemplifies scientific excellence, but also shows that women are a natural part of computer science – and that doors sometimes only open when someone courageously knocks.

Science with impact: Pioneer in human-computer interaction

Susanne Boll is one of the leading scientists in the field of human-computer interaction. Her research combines computer science with social relevance and her work is actively shaping the digital future. But what really sets her apart is her commitment beyond science: she is a bridge builder between research, internationality and equal opportunities.

Since her time as one of the first female junior professors at the University of Oldenburg, she has made a significant contribution to the development of the Department of Computer Science. She drives internationalization, promotes young academics and is a tireless advocate for women in STEM professions. She is not just concerned with numbers or quotas – she creates real networks, offers support and stands by the side of many young female researchers as a mentor.

A formative companion: my personal connection to Susanne Boll

I first met Susanne Boll as a junior professor – a dynamic, modern voice in science. She not only imparted the latest technological knowledge to us, but also set an example of the speed and curiosity with which new innovations must be embraced. Her lectures were not only inspiring, but also trend-setting: “Together with Hilmar, I implemented my first web projects back then.

I particularly remember my time at OFFIS, when I directly experienced how she promoted internationalization in science. She brought perspectives from all over the world to Oldenburg – and specifically to my office: one of her first research assistants did not come from Germany and came directly to me because of my experience abroad.

It wasn’t just her scientific vision that impressed me. Her approach to balancing family and career has shown me that both are possible – even if it brings challenges. Meetings with a baby carriage? Not a taboo for Susanne, but a natural part of reality. This attitude encouraged me and still shapes me today.

A role model for science – and far beyond

Susanne Boll is more than just an outstanding researcher – she is a trailblazer for women in computer science and beyond. Her work shows that success in science is not tied to gender, but to talent, commitment and the right framework conditions.

I am grateful that I was able to experience her as a mentor, colleague and role model – and I am delighted that her achievements have now been recognized with the Zonta Woman of the Year 2025 will be honored.
