Once a year, girls and young women have the opportunity to get a taste of technical and scientific careers – and this year’s Girls’ Day was a complete success! On 25.04.2024, we opened our doors to introduce the participants to the fascinating world of computer science.
A day full of discoveries and motivation
The girls’ enthusiasm was palpable right from the start. After a warm welcome and a brief introduction to our company, we got started: our young guests were able to explore our working environment and gain an insight into the everyday life of computer scientists.
Lectures and practice: Knowledge directly applied
The morning was filled with exciting presentations that illustrated the breadth of computer science. Our experts explained how software development works, what artificial intelligence is and what role computer science plays in our everyday lives. But theory alone is not enough – and so after a short break, it was straight into practice.
Learning to program with Calliope
A highlight of the day was the workshop with the “Calliope” mini-computer. Here, the girls learned the basics of programming and completed tasks. In teams, they worked on creative solutions, programmed simple games and discovered the endless possibilities that computer science offers. The Calliope platform is particularly beginner-friendly and offered the participants a low-threshold introduction to the world of programming.
Focus on creativity and teamwork
In the afternoon, the focus was on teamwork. The girls developed their own small projects, which they proudly presented at the end of the day. The variety of ideas and the creative implementation were impressive. It was clear to see how much joy and motivation there was in the teams.
A successful conclusion
Girls’ Day ended with a small closing round in which the girls shared their experiences. Many of them emphasized how exciting and informative the day was for them and some are now considering computer science as a career option.
We are proud that Girls’ Day is helping to get young women interested in technical careers and show them that the world of IT is open to them too. We are already looking forward to the next Girls’ Day and the many new faces we will be able to welcome then!
