A revolutionary technology! Jokes aside, edge computing has and will change the way data is processed and analyzed. In contrast to traditional cloud computing, in which data is stored and processed in remote data centers, data processing in edge computing, as the name suggests, takes place closer to the data source, i.e. at the edge of the network near the end devices and sensors.

In conventional cloud computing, data from devices and sensors is sent to central servers where it is processed and analyzed. As the data needs a certain amount of time to get from the devices to the remote server and back, this process can lead to delays in processing the data. By shifting the computing power closer to the data source, edge computing is able to solve this problem.

With edge computing, data is processed locally on edge devices or edge servers that are located in the immediate vicinity of the data source. This enables fast data processing and analysis in real time, as the data does not have to be sent over long distances to a central server. Latency is drastically reduced, which means that decisions and actions can be implemented much faster. This is particularly important in applications that require an immediate response, such as industrial automation or medical monitoring systems.

Another very important aspect of edge computing is the ability to store and process the collected data locally without having to upload it to the cloud. Due to the currently much-discussed topic of data security, this is an immense advantage, as the data does not even leave the company. Companies can keep their data on site and at the same time benefit from the advantages of fast data processing.

Edge computing makes data processing decentralized and highly efficient, which is of great importance for many different industries and applications. Whether smart cities, networked factories or healthcare applications – edge computing is changing the way we handle data and opening up new horizons for innovation and efficiency.
